Do I need an electrician?
For problems big or small, such as replacing wiring, installing outdoor lighting, or troubleshooting an electrical problem you should trust a professional to handle the job. Electricity can be dangerous and trusting anyone less than an expert could lead to serious risks, such as electrocution and fire.
What should I ask when hiring an electrician?
You should always check out your electrician before hiring. There are a few questions to ask, including:
- What training have you had?
- Are you licensed?
- Are you insured?
- What is your experience?
- Is your work guaranteed?
- Do you provide a free estimate?
- Do you have references?
What type of training is required to become a licensed electrician?
Specific requirements for licensing vary from state to state. In Massachusetts, a combination of classroom training and practical experience is required, as well as passing required testing for licensure. Our North Shore electricians also undergo ongoing professional training to ensure our knowledge is always up to date.
How much money will my repair or installation cost?
The price for electrical work depends on the scope of the job and time required to complete the repair or installation. Your electrician should be able to provide information about the cost of your job before starting the work. Ask for a quote to avoid surprises later.
Why do my circuit breakers keep tripping?
In most cases, this happens when the circuit is overloaded. For example, a 20 AMP circuit at 120 volts can hold up to 1920 watts. This means you could run multiple appliances, up to the maximum of 1920 watts, but not more than one large wattage appliance. It is important to note that tripping circuit breakers are not always a bad thing, as it helps to avoid overheating.
Should I install GFCI outlets?
GFCI outlets are used near areas where water is found, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and garages. These outlets are designed to prevent electrocutions. Newer homes come with GFCI outlets, but older homes may not have them. It is a good idea to replace outlets near sinks with GFCI outlets to improve safety.
Can anything be done to lower my electric bills?
Electricity is essential to modern life. However, many people want to lower their energy usage, both to save money and for environmental reasons. An inspection of your system is a good place to start. Problems with your system can be addressed, and you can learn how to save energy and lower your monthly bills.
